What is a PAC code?
A PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) lets you move your mobile number to a new network. You give it to your new provider, and on the switch day your number moves across. Your old service ends automatically - you don’t need to cancel separately.
What is a STAC code?
A STAC (Service Termination Authorisation Code) is used when you want to leave your provider but don’t want to keep the number. Text “STAC” to 75075 to get one.
How to switch, step by step
- Check your contract. Look for the end date and any early termination charges. Handset balances are usually payable in full.
- Choose your new plan and network, checking coverage where your team works.
- Get your PAC codes. Text “PAC” to 65075 from each phone, or request codes in bulk from your current provider’s business team.
- Give the codes to your new provider and agree a switch date.
- Insert the new SIMs on the day. Numbers usually transfer within the working day.
How long does it take to switch?
Ofcom rules say your new provider must complete the switch within one working day of receiving your PAC. Any loss of service must not last longer than one working day. For larger fleets, it’s common to move everyone on one planned date - often at a quiet time - so the whole team switches together.
Moving a whole team: tips for businesses
- Keep a simple list of every number, user, handset and PAC code.
- Check codes haven’t expired - they last 30 days.
- Make sure handsets are unlocked before the switch day.
- Pick a quiet day for the move and tell your team what to expect.
Will I lose service when switching?
There may be a short gap of a few hours on the switch day while the number moves across, but your number and contacts stay the same. Planning the switch for a quiet time keeps disruption to a minimum.
